✨ Galactic Impact is a turn-based, space empire 4X that’s played in a web browser. Build a galaxy-spanning empire, manage inter-empire relations, with only a short, periodic time commitment.
- Galactic Impact is a love letter to 90s space “4X” games like Pax Imperia and Master of Orion, updated for modern mechanics and sensibilities.
- Plays in a browser: Log in and play from any desktop browser, no downloads or installs.
- Turn-based on a 3 hour clock: Every three hours, player input is paused, queued actions/combats/interactions are resolved, then the game reopens.
- The intent is that 15-30 minute sessions, 5-10 times per week is a maximum time commitment to be fully engaged with the game.
- “Massively multiplayer”: All players exist in the same persistent shared Galaxy, and can choose to either collaboratively explore or compete over a large-but-finite number of planets.
- Free-to-play: with a low cost “Premium” subscription option mainly limited to cosmetic and convenience features.
- Website: Galactic Impact — Space Empire. 4X. MMO.
State of the Playerbase
- User account Signups: 600 (includes spammy form submissions)
- Empires created: 300 (more accurately reflects total humans who have created accounts)
- Onboarded: 260 (completed the in-game onboarding tutorial)
- Played: 140 (completed an independent player action post-tutorial)
- Weekly Active Users: 7
- Premium Subscribers: 17 (all time), 9 (current)
Goals
Galactic Impact has been under active development for five years, and has a great deal of in-game content and several mechanisms with potential expansion surface.
Players who play for at least a month tend to retain for up to a year or more, which is great!
Unfortunately, retention tends to be proportional to the number of Weekly Active Users, so when that number is low, players tend to churn[1], which leads to a decrease in WAU 🙁🔁📉
Additionally, some in-game mechanisms need to be tuned and balanced based on the volume of competition among players, where ‘more’ is helpful for the in-game economy.
[1] The Galaxy feels “empty” and there’s not a lot of player-player engagement.
- Reengage with inactive players via more frequency/consistency in our mailing list (automatically populated during the ‘Empire creation’ step of signup) and get 25–50% of them to log back in and continue playing.
- Average at least one new ‘Empire creation’-qualified signup per week.
- Understand (and determine how to correct) the Onboarded-to-Played funnel drop-off
- Do we need some other engagement step(s) to retain them post-Tutorial?
- Are we signing up the wrong Players? How do we target the right Players?
- Does the marketing copy/website not give an accurate picture of how the game plays?
- Grow the overall playerbase to 50+ WAU.
Responsibilities
📔 The need may span parts of both/either a Marketing or Community Manager role, so if a subset of this list of expectations speaks to you overall, reach out and let’s chat! I’m flexible on execution details.
- Find the right channels to be targeting to get the word out about the game.
- e.g. the time/engagement format of Galactic Impact isn’t a great fit for “Streamers” as a channel
- Determine the right way to engage with each of those channels given Galactic Impact’s nature and format.
- Play some amount weekly to build an understanding of what will & won’t work for the above.
- Develop marketing strategy and assets. Could include copy/edits, images, short video clips.
- Periodically engage in Discord to welcome new Players and foster community.
- Help identify issues with the onboarding funnel and in-game opportunities for driving conversions through the onboarding funnel to WAU and/or premium.
Engagement
